You ask the Question…We Have the Answer
August 14th, 2008
This industry is a mystery to so many people. And the right answers are sometimes hard to find. So to help you find those answers, we want you to submit your questions about the talent, modeling and entertainment industry.
I get so many questions on a daily basis about the entertainment industry and how to get started. This will be a great way to provide answers to some common and not so common questions!
As an expert in the industry for over 20 years, I have coached talent and started careers on Broadway, TV, film and print. Many people think of the industry as a mystery. Most don’t even have an idea of where to begin. This blog will be devoted to helping people get factual and practical advice and knowledge so they can feel confident they are going in the right direction.
With so many scams and misdirection out there, I want the public to have a place to go to ask questions and obtain the right answers.
Every 2 weeks I will pick a question posted here and give you the right answer! So ask away…..

What do you think about the websites offered to actors for a per month price to see auditions and submit themselves. Do you think this is necessary even if they are represented by an agent? If so do you recommend any specific? Or ones to stay clear from?

Hi,
I think this is great and am so glad you are doing this. I am a mother of two and my 8 year old daughter has been bugging me to death to be a “famous actress” and to be on tv. I don’t know anything about this industry and have heard Clark Howard and other news reports about scams and people getting taken for a lot of money. I hear that you should not pay anything, but others say you do. How do I know when it’s safe to pay money or not?
I have really tried to put off my daughter but she has been bugging me about this since she was 5 years old. I don’t want to discourage her dreams, but I am kind of scared because I don’t know what to do. So I do nothing. Can you explain what money should be paid and when and how to know if something is a scam?
Thanks
Cindy

There is a lot of bad press on the internet about AMTC being a scam. For example, one site stated that although several agents, casting directors, etc. are scheduled to appear, they are usually no-shows. Also, other claims contend that AMTC Regional Directors are paid to usher competitors to the convention. Also, claims of the costly fees associated with attendance along with the numerous “add-on” fees such as photography, additional registered attendee badges, entry into more than 3 categories, all points to a scam. And lastly, many sites point to the overall low success rate of attendance. What is your opinion?

Hi Nicolle:
It is great to find a company like The Actors Scene who not only find and promote talented actors, etc., but to find someone whose business is close within the area where I live. I have been very interested in TV commercials, and would like to know what does it take to be cast for upcoming commercials without costly spending to get there. I am 46 years of age, but look late 30’s (I believe). I have been in the recruiting industry for 11 years; am funny at times, married - no kids, but fit very well into any setting. Any tips for this middle-aged woman? Keep up the good work.
